Founder
Ronald D. Schmeichel
Ron Schmeichel is the Founder and Chairman of JJR Private Capital, an investment firm with over two decades of focused investment in high-growth, small-capitalization companies. Under his leadership, JJR has sponsored numerous small-cap companies that have grown, merged, or been acquired at billion-dollar valuations across a diverse range of industries, including pharmaceuticals and wellness, energy infrastructure, telecommunications, financial services, and materials.
Throughout his career, Mr. Schmeichel has served on the boards of more than 20 public companies, guiding portfolio companies through transformative mergers and acquisitions and critical debt and equity financings. He currently serves as Chairman of Legacy Pharma, a platform company focused on acquiring portfolios of mature, off-patent branded pharmaceutical products in the United States. From 2020 to 2024, he served as Chairman of Lisbon Valley Mine, a copper mining operation in Utah that achieved an over 850% increase in copper reserves while pioneering novel extraction methods designed to minimize environmental and ecological impact — positioning the company as one of America’s most environmentally responsible copper producers. Mr. Schmeichel has also served on the Advisory Board of the TSX Venture Exchange.
Mr. Schmeichel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with Merit from York University and a Juris Doctorate from Western University. A dedicated alumnus, he has maintained a longstanding commitment to Western for over two decades — returning regularly as a guest speaker for law and business students and making successive donations to Western Law. In 2022, he made a landmark $10-million gift to establish the Ronald D. Schmeichel Building for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, a 100,000-square-foot facility that opened in fall 2024 and is home to the largest maker space in Canada. The gift also created the Ronald D. Schmeichel Founders Awards, providing financial support and mentorship to the university’s most promising student entrepreneurs. Together, these contributions have helped establish a first-of-its-kind Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre that integrates entrepreneurship studies into the core curriculum — a program developed in partnership with the Ivey Business School, Canada’s premier business school.
